Every Carnival ship offers a unique experience, and while some have stood out more than others, I can confidently say there hasn’t been one I didn’t enjoy. After all, being out on the ocean is an experience in itself. Here’s my ranking of the ships I’ve had the privilege of sailing, highlighting what made each one memorable and how they compare.
While there are differences in amenities and features across Carnival ships, I do believe the quality of a cruise is often defined by the people you meet along the way. With that in mind, I’m ranking these ships based on objective factors including logistics, dining options, entertainment, unique experiences, and overall atmosphere, to give you a clear idea of what each ship offers.
1. Carnival Liberty
Carnival Liberty ranks first on my list and has a gross tonnage of 110,000 GT and can accommodate up to 2,974 passengers at full capacity. Built in 2005, the Liberty primarily sails from New Orleans, Louisiana and Port Canaveral, Florida. The ship offers cruises to destinations in the Caribbean, including the Bahamas, Cozumel, and Grand Turk.
Carnival Liberty tops my list because it was a special trip I’ll never forget. From the 2 a.m. late-night talks on the Lido deck eating drunken pizza to the themed events, the amazing group of friends I made, the convenient debarkation port location, and the ship’s layout, which made everything easy to navigate, all contributed to an unforgettable experience. The party can start early in NOLA the day before or after you leave, the port was easy to drive to, and em/debarking was a breeze.
The staff was incredible and made every day memorable. I loved that there were two coffee shops (instead of the typical one) to fuel my mornings, and the itinerary was perfect – stopping in some of my favorite destinations: Honduras, Belize, and Roatan.
Carnival Liberty was the first ship to introduce Carnival’s “Fun Ship 2.0” upgrades, bringing a fresh mix of dining and entertainment to the fleet. Guests can enjoy meals in the Silver Olympian and Golden Olympian Dining Rooms, both offering elegant settings with a classic cruise ship charm.
Liberty is home to the lively Hot & Cool Nightclub, where the dance floor stays packed late into the night. For food, Guy’s Burger Joint serves up some of the best burgers at sea, while Blue Iguana Cantina offers freshly made tacos and burritos. The ship’s SkyBox Sports Bar is a go-to spot for catching live games, and the Alchemy Bar provides a sophisticated cocktail experience crafted by expert mixologists.
2. Carnival Magic
“Magic happens on the Magic,” I always say! With a gross tonnage of 130,000 GT, Carnival Magic can host 3,690 passengers. This ship sails from ports such as Norfolk, Virginia, Galveston, Texas, and Miami, Florida, offering voyages to the Caribbean, including destinations like Jamaica, the Cayman Islands, and the Bahamas.
Carnival Magic was built in 2011 and stands out with its SportSquare, the first outdoor ropes course at sea, giving guests an adventurous way to take in ocean views. The ship features two main dining rooms, Northern Lights and Southern Lights, both offering diverse menus and an elegant dining experience.
Both times I’ve been on this ship, amazing people have come our way, many that I still keep in touch with. The ship had plenty of activities and events, the food was great, we never had trouble getting seats at the pool, and the ports are all wonderful. I also always preferred the trivia genres on this ship compared to others!
Vibe Nightclub keeps the party going with a modern atmosphere and great music. The Magic was the first cruise I went on as a 21 year old, and I really got out of my comfort zone by chatting with people on both sailings. (I grew up anxious and shy, if you can believe it) The casino bar on the Magic is my favorite. Both smoking and non-smoking bars are adorned with purple walls covered in glitter, creating a vibrant and festive atmosphere. The magician-themed decor adds a touch of whimsy, enhancing the overall ambiance. Located just off the casino floor, these bars serve a variety of cocktails, beers, and wines, making them ideal spots to celebrate with fellow travelers. The bartenders, including Thea (wherever you are in the world, I miss you), ensure guests have a memorable experience while enjoying the lively environment.
For specialty dining, Cucina del Capitano serves authentic Italian cuisine with a family-style touch, while RedFrog Pub brings a laid-back Caribbean vibe with house-brewed ThirstyFrog Red Ale. Magic offers a great mix of relaxation and excitement, making it a favorite among cruisers.
The only downsides I encountered were the embarking process and the ship’s layout; if you’re going out of Norfolk, it’s a pain to get to and from the terminal. It’s nothing to worry about or drastically changed my opinion of the ship. I did find the ship a bit difficult to navigate, also. Despite having been on the ship three times, I still have a cumbersome time figuring out which staircases lead to which floors and areas. It’s one of those ships where you might need a little extra time to get familiar with the layout, even after multiple sailings.
Embarking on the Carnival Legend from Norfolk, Virginia, offers a unique experience that differs from larger ports. The embarkation process begins with parking at the Cedar Grove Parking Facility, located approximately 14 blocks from the cruise terminal. The daily parking rate is $10, payable upon entry, with various payment methods accepted. (Cruise Experts) The GPS kept directing us to the wrong parking lot, so we eventually just ended up following where most cars in the area were going.
After parking, passengers must board a shuttle tram to reach the terminal. This shuttle service is essential, as direct access to the terminal from the parking lot is not available. However, some travelers have noted that the shuttle process can be less organized, leading to backups and delays. (Cruise Line)
Overall, while the embarkation process in Norfolk requires some additional steps compared to larger ports, with proper planning and awareness, travelers can navigate the process smoothly and begin their Carnival Legend voyage with minimal stress.

3. Carnival Pride
Constructed in 2002, Carnival Pride boasts a gross tonnage of 88,500 GT and has a passenger capacity of 2,124. It typically sails from Baltimore, Maryland, on itineraries that take passengers to the Eastern and Western Caribbean, including destinations such as Nassau, Freeport, and Grand Cayman.
Carnival Pride is known for its Renaissance-inspired decor, giving the ship a more elegant and artistic feel compared to others in the fleet. The Normandie Restaurant serves as the main dining venue, offering a refined yet welcoming atmosphere. Beauties Nightclub is the go-to spot for dancing, featuring an intimate yet energetic vibe.
In my opinion, the Pride has the nicest Steakhouse. It is absolutely stunning. Fahrenheit 555 Steakhouse aboard the Carnival Pride is known for its elegant and intimate atmosphere, featuring rich wood tones, plush seating, and soft lighting that creates a warm and inviting space. The service is consistently praised for its attentiveness and personalized touch, ensuring a top-notch dining experience.
I’ve been on the Pride three times and have enjoyed every one, I still occasionally keep in touch with those I met on my sailing in 2013! Below are two hella throwbacks of baby Holly, one being in 2013 and one in 2018. I will cherish those memories forever, it’s crazy seeing some of the people I met in Circle C getting married and having lives of their own.
4. Carnival Freedom
If you are sailing on Carnival Freedom, you are stepping onto one of Carnival’s most recognizable and well-loved ships. Launched in 2007, this Conquest-class vessel measures just over 110,000 gross tons and carries nearly 3,000 guests. It features many of Carnival’s signature elements including colorful interiors, a relaxed atmosphere, and friendly service. Depending on your expectations, it might be the right fit or leave you wanting more.
Having previously sailed on Carnival Liberty, I immediately noticed that Freedom shares a nearly identical layout. From the atrium to the pool decks to the Lido Marketplace, the ship feels very familiar. If you have been on Liberty before, that familiarity can be a comfort, especially when navigating the ship on your first day.
Dining and Public Spaces
The dining options are consistent with Carnival’s standard offerings. Main dining is served in the Chic and Posh dining rooms, and casual favorites include Guy’s Burger Joint, BlueIguana Cantina, and the Lido Marketplace. For a more refined experience, the Sun King Steakhouse provides a quiet setting and excellent service.
Public areas are clean and well-maintained, and the Serenity Adult-Only Retreat is a welcome escape for guests looking for a peaceful atmosphere. Pool decks, lounges, and common spaces offer plenty of seating and a laid-back environment.
Entertainment and Activities
This is where my experience on Freedom diverged from other Carnival sailings. While there is a full entertainment schedule, including musical productions in the Victoriana Lounge, live comedy, trivia, and poolside events, I felt the energy and variety of activities were more limited than on ships like Liberty.
If you enjoy full sea days with packed programming and high-energy events, you might find Freedom’s offerings to be somewhat lighter. The fun is still there, but it may not have the same momentum or variety as other ships in the fleet.
Fire Incident and Recovery
In May 2022, Carnival Freedom experienced a fire in its funnel while docked in Grand Turk. Fortunately, the fire was quickly contained, no injuries occurred, and the ship was returned to service shortly after with a temporary modification to its iconic funnel. Carnival’s response was efficient and transparent, and the incident showed the ship’s resilience and the professionalism of the crew.
Destinations and Itineraries
Carnival Freedom offers sailings to The Bahamas, Mexico, and the Caribbean, with frequent stops in Cozumel, Mahogany Bay, Nassau, and Grand Turk. The ship’s mid-size design makes it easy to navigate and suitable for both first-time cruisers and those looking for a more traditional cruise experience.
Final Thoughts
Carnival Freedom provides a reliable, relaxed cruise experience with many of the Carnival brand’s familiar strengths. The layout will feel especially comfortable to those who have sailed on ships like Liberty. While the activity schedule may not be as robust or high-energy as some newer vessels, the ship remains a solid choice for guests seeking simplicity, great service, and beautiful destinations.

5. Carnival Legend
Carnival Legend, launched in 2002, is part of the Conquest-class ships, with a gross tonnage of 88,500 and a passenger capacity of 2,124. Known for its elegant design and a more intimate, relaxed atmosphere, the Carnival Legend offers an unforgettable cruising experience.
This ship boasts a variety of dining options, including the main dining rooms, Truffles Restaurant and The Golden Fleece Steakhouse, both offering delicious, tasty meals. Additionally, the Lido Marketplace provides casual dining with a wide variety of dishes.
For entertainment, Carnival Legend offers fun-filled nights at the Mad Hatter’s Ball nightclub, where guests can enjoy live music and dancing. The ship also features a large Serenity Adult-Only Retreat, perfect for those seeking some peace and quiet while enjoying beautiful ocean views.
The Carnival Legend sails to various destinations, including the Caribbean, with itineraries that often stop in ports like Cozumel, Grand Cayman, and Jamaica. Guests rave about the ship’s spacious design and wide range of activities, making it an excellent choice for families and couples alike.
6. Carnival Paradise
Reflecting on my cruise aboard the Carnival Paradise at age 13 brings back fond memories of swimming in Grand Cayman, newfound friendships, and late-night Just Dance sessions. The ship’s manageable layout made it easy for me to navigate, a contrast to some larger vessels I’ve encountered in later years.
Ship Overview
Launched in 1998, the Carnival Paradise is a Fantasy-class ship with a length of 855 feet and a beam of 103 feet. It accommodates up to 2,124 passengers and 920 crew members.
Positive Differentiators
- Intimate Atmosphere: The ship’s smaller size fosters a cozy environment, allowing for more personalized service and easier navigation.
- Recent Upgrades: A 2018 refurbishment added 38 new cabins and updated public areas, enhancing the overall guest experience.
Negative Differentiators
- Limited Amenities: Compared to newer, larger ships, the Paradise offers fewer dining options and entertainment venues.
- Age of the Ship: Despite refurbishments, some passengers note that the ship’s age is evident in certain areas.
Overall, the Carnival Paradise provides a classic cruising experience, balancing the charm of a smaller ship with the essential amenities for a memorable voyage.
7. Carnival Elation
Carnival Elation has a gross tonnage of 70,367 GT and can accommodate 2,020 passengers. This ship primarily operates from Jacksonville, Florida, offering cruises to the Bahamas, as well as various Western Caribbean ports like Cozumel and Grand Turk.
Carnival Elation, inspired by the muses of art and literature, brings a creative flair to its design. The Inspiration Dining Room serves as the ship’s main dining venue, offering classic cruise fare with attentive service. Jekyll & Hyde Dance Club features a split personality theme, creating an exciting atmosphere for nightlife lovers.
It is considered an “older” and “smaller ship,” as the boat was built in 1998. For context, I sailed the Elation back in January of 2022, when Covid restrictions were still in effect. The Elation ranks the lowest on my list because the ship didn’t have similar quantities of offerings as others, there wasn’t a whole lot to do on the ship as many activities were not held, and it comparably just didn’t have the same energy as previous trips. The Elation may be better suited for those looking for a shorter getaway or away from the chaos of summer sailings.
The summer is when higher quantities of those my age go on cruises. But, the prices were dirt cheap during this time and it was still 100% worth it. Would I sail on the Elation again? Most likely not, but the Elation’s charm and intimate size make it a great option for those looking for a more relaxed cruise experience. It was my first time going to the DR and will always be special!
8. Carnival Valor
In 2015, I sailed the Valor with my family out of Orlando, Florida. The ship was nice, but it didn’t stick out to me any more or any less than others. However, I really enjoyed the itinerary on this ship (Belize, Costa Maya, Cozumel, Isla Roatan).
9. Carnival Fascination
The Carnival Fascination, a member of Carnival Cruise Line’s Fantasy-class, was launched in 1994. With a capacity of 2,040 passengers and a tonnage of 70,367, it served countless guests over its 26-year tenure.
In September 2020, amidst the global pause in cruise operations, Carnival Cruise Line announced the retirement of several of its older vessels, including the Fascination. Initially, there were plans to repurpose the ship as a floating hotel under the name Century Harmony. However, these plans did not materialize.
By February 2022, the Carnival Fascination was sold for recycling and subsequently scrapped in Gadani, Pakistan. This marked the end of an era for a ship that had been a part of many travelers’ cherished memories.
The retirement and scrapping of the Fascination reflect the cruise industry’s shift towards newer, more efficient vessels, aiming to enhance guest experiences and meet modern environmental standards. While the Fascination is no longer sailing, its legacy lives on in the hearts of those who embarked on adventures aboard this classic cruise ship.
The Carnival Fascination was the first cruise ship I ever sailed on, and at just eleven years old, I wasn’t exactly equipped to judge the experience with a critical eye. Naturally, it stands as the oldest ship I’ve ever been on, and compared to the newer vessels I’ve sailed since, it didn’t offer as many amenities. That alone puts it at the bottom of my ranking, though it still holds a special place as the ship that introduced me to cruising.
