Nestled between volcanoes and bursting with colonial charm, Antigua, Guatemala is a city that feels like stepping into another world. With its cobblestone streets, colorful facades, and a perfect blend of history, culture, and adventure, it’s no surprise that travelers find themselves falling in love with this underrated travel gem. Whether you’re here to soak in the rich Mayan and Spanish heritage, chase adrenaline-fueled hikes, or simply enjoy the café culture, Antigua has something for everyone. Here are 10 must-do experiences that will make your time in Antigua unforgettable.
1. Hike Acatenango and Volcan de Fuego
If you’re up for a challenge, hiking Acatenango is hands down one of the most rewarding things you can do in Guatemala. The overnight trek takes you 3,976 meters (13,045 feet!) above sea level, where you’ll have a front-row seat to Volcán de Fuego, one of the most active volcanoes in the world. If hikers are lucky, they will watch Fuego erupt, sending lava and ash into the night sky. Even if it doesn’t, the sunrise alone makes the brutal hike worth every step. I went with Extreme Life Tours to do my hike and couldn’t have been happier with the experience!
Pacaya volcano is another jaw dropping hiking option for those who would prefer a shorter trek or are short on time!

2. See the Santa Catalina Arch
One of Antigua’s most iconic landmarks, the Santa Catalina Arch is impossible to miss. Originally built in the 17th century as a hidden passageway for cloistered nuns, the arch is now one of the most photographed spots in the city. The best time to visit is golden hour, when the soft light illustrates a beautiful view and Volcán de Agua towers in the background.

3. Join the Antigua Bar Crawl
If you want a fun night out, the Antigua Bar Crawl is a must. It’s the perfect way to meet fellow travelers while experiencing some of the city’s best nightlife. The crawl includes stops at places like La Sala nightclub, Hugo’s, and Tropicana’s rooftop bar, where you’ll dance, play drinking games (Stack Cup got intense), and take in the electric energy of Antigua’s nightlife. Tickets are $20 per person (around $15 if you buy during the presale). It’s all you can drink for the first two hours and you will have a blast with people from all over the world! The bars rotate depending which day of the week it is. Buy your tickets here!

4. Take a Coffee Tour at a Local Farm
Guatemala produces some of the best coffee in the world, and Antigua’s volcanic soil makes the coffee here extra special. Taking a coffee tour lets you see the entire process, from picking the beans to roasting and brewing. Some of the best tours are at Filadelfia Coffee Resort and De la Gente, where you can even roast your own beans and taste coffee straight from the source.
5. Explore the Architecture & Ruins of Antigua
Antigua is filled with centuries-old ruins, a reminder of its history of massive earthquakes and colonial past. Wandering through places like Iglesia de San Francisco, Santa Clara Convent, and Las Capuchinas is a great way to explore the city. The crumbling stone walls, overgrown courtyards, and intricate carvings are fascinating. Most are free to enter, but some, including the Antigua Cathedral, cost 20QTZ to enter.

6. Peruse Coffee Shops & Cafes
Antigua has no shortage of great brunch spots, but Union Cafe and El Viejo Cafe were my favorites. Union Cafe has a beautiful garden setting and serves up fresh fruit bowls and smoothies that are perfect for cooling off in the heat. El Viejo Cafe has a more rustic vibe with some of the best coffee in town and a pancake and fruit platter that was exactly what I needed before hiking Acatenango.
The Antigua Starbucks was the most beautiful Starbucks I’ve ever seen, It’s huge and has some different options than in the states! The walls are covered in colorful paintings of flowers, birds, and more.

7. Hike to Cerro de la Cruz for the Best View of Antigua
For the best panoramic view of Antigua, head to Cerro de la Cruz. It’s a short but steep walk from the city center, taking about 30 minutes uphill, and it’s so worth it. From the top, you get an incredible view of the colorful rooftops of Antigua with Volcán de Agua looming in the background. Go early in the morning or around sunset for cooler weather and the best lighting. I personally didn’t do this during my trip, but I heard fantastic things from those I chatted with who did.
8. Visit Hobbitenango
If you want to escape the city for a bit, Hobbitenango is the perfect spot. About 30 minutes outside of Antigua, this eco-park is designed to look like a Hobbit village, complete with tiny round doors and an unreal mountain view. There are hammocks, giant swings, and cozy spots to just relax and take in the scenery. Whether you go for the food, the view, or just to feel like you’ve stepped into Middle Earth, it’s an easy and fun day trip.
9. Try Street Food in Antigua’s Markets
Some of the best food in Antigua isn’t found in a restaurant. The street food scene is full of local flavors and traditional Guatemalan dishes. Head to Mercado Central or small street stalls to try mango with lime and chili, pupusas, tamales, or shucos, which are basically Guatemalan-style hot dogs. Some of the best meals come from the simplest food stands.
10. Take a Chocolate-Making Class
Guatemala has a long history with cacao, dating back to the ancient Maya, and taking a chocolate-making class is the best way to learn about it. At ChocoMuseo, you can grind cacao beans, mix your own chocolate, and take home your creations. Plus, the chocolate in Guatemala is insanely good, so it’s worth it just for the tasting alone.
