My time in the UK (June 2017) was a journey through history, from the grand streets of London to its darker corners. We explored the city’s iconic landmarks before diving into its wartime past at the Imperial War Museum and the Churchill War Rooms, where history felt alive beneath the streets. But London has more than just political history, it holds secrets in its alleyways.
A chilling Jack the Ripper walking tour took me back to the eerie nights of 1888, unraveling one of history’s greatest mysteries. Finally, I made my way to Portsmouth, where I set sail for France, carrying with me a deeper understanding of Britain’s resilience, and rich past.
Day 1 – London
Walking tour of London
After visiting the Imperial War Museum, our class took a drive through London, passing landmarks like the London Eye, Tower of London, London Bridge, Trafalgar Square, and the National Gallery. We then set out on foot to explore Piccadilly Circus, Covent Garden, Leicester Square, and Apple Market. The area was filled with high-end shops and lively street performers, making it a fun place to wander and take in the energy of the city.

The Heston Hyde Hotel in the UK was a practical choice for our stay; it was nothing fancy, but it got the job done. Located on the outskirts of London, it provided a quiet retreat after long days of sightseeing. The rooms were spacious and clean, with basic amenities like free Wi-Fi and a fitness center. While the hotel had an on-site restaurant and bar, the location wasn’t the most convenient for exploring central London, requiring a bit of travel to reach major attractions. However, for a place to rest in a comfortable setting, it worked well for what we needed!
Day 2 – London
Buckingham Palace: We took a bus near Buckingham Palace just in time to catch the final moments of the Changing of the Guard ceremony. Afterward, we learned about the palace’s history and various royal traditions of the British monarchy. The Queen was in residence, signified by the flag flying atop the palace.
Visit the Churchill War Rooms : Our EF Tour guide brought us beneath the Treasury Building to explore Churchill’s Cabinet War Rooms, the underground bunker where he directed the British government during the Blitz and the later V1 and V2 attacks on London. The site also houses a museum dedicated to Churchill, offering a glimpse into his leadership during the war. Key areas included his private phone room, the “Map Room,” the strategic hub of the British war effort, his underground living quarters, and the main entrance to the museum.
Day 3 – London
Portsmouth
Travel by ferry to Caen – This was one of the coolest experiences I’ve ever done, it was so cool crossing the English Channel! After a six-hour ferry journey, spent having dinner from the cafeteria and chatting, our class arrived at the Port of Caen. As I disembarked, I took in as much of the ship as possible before heading toward the bus that transported us to customs.
