During our brief sojourn in Austria, our class embarked on a day trip to Berchtesgaden, Germany, a picturesque town nestled in the Bavarian Alps. Our primary destination was the Eagle’s Nest (Kehlsteinhaus), a historic mountaintop retreat perched at an elevation of 1,834 meters. Originally constructed in 1937–1938, it served as a diplomatic reception house during the Nazi regime.

We indulged in freshly baked pretzels at the on-site restaurant, savoring the crisp mountain air with each bite. The combination of the warm, doughy pretzels and the cool alpine breeze created a moment of pure contentment.

Reflecting on our itinerary, I recalled that we also visited Mozart’s Birthplace (Mozarts Geburtshaus) during our trip. Located at Getreidegasse 9 in Salzburg, Austria, this bright-yellow townhouse is where Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born in 1756 and spent the first 17 years of his life. The museum housed a collection of instruments, documents, and portraits, including the mini-violin he played as a toddler, providing a fascinating glimpse into the early life of one of classical music’s greatest composers.

These experiences, from the heights of the Eagle’s Nest to the cultural depths of Mozart’s birthplace, enriched our journey through this historically and culturally rich region.

My Tips for Visiting Austria:

✅ Eagle’s Nest:

  • Visit between May and October, as the road is closed in winter due to snow.
  • Book tickets in advance, as it’s a popular attraction with limited capacity.
  • Wear comfortable walking shoes: there are some steep paths and trails at the top. There was an elevator that helped you go upwards, if that is a concern of your party.
  • If possible, go early in the morning for clearer views before the midday haze.
  • Bring a jacket, even in summer, it can be chilly at the summit!

✅ Mozart’s Birthplace (Salzburg):

  • Buy a combo ticket if you also want to visit Mozart’s Residence, located across the river.
  • The museum is small and gets crowded, try visiting early or late in the day.
  • Photography is not allowed in some parts, so check the rules beforehand.

Both of these destinations offer a unique mix of history, culture, and breathtaking scenery, it’s definitely worth adding to any Austria itinerary!
